Stock photos are a problem. On the one hand, they’re a great way to make your content more interesting and attractive by emphasizing a point, breaking up text, or just by helping you stand out from the crowd.

On the other hand, they can be expensive, terrible, or completely and utterly inexplicable. Who knew that eating salad alone was so hilarious?

This site has an exellent mixed bag of abstracts, people, landscapes, city scenes, business stuff and more. Good for backgrounds and features alike.

2. Superfamous

We could look through these all day. There’s a lot of abstract work here, including some spectacular aerial stuff. Even if abstract landscapes from 10,000 feet aren’t exactly what you need, you should check it out anyway.

3. Gratisography

Gratisography is brilliant. It’s got some of the traditional stock weirdness, but in a way that's attention-grabbing and fun, not disturbing. This is definitely a website you’ll be coming back to on a regular basis.

Completely free of all known copyright restrictions, full of character, and often intriguing. These photos are all historical, and often feature some pretty cool scenes.

5. Public Domain Archive

This site is extra helpful because of its categories. Rather than just browsing through a whole bunch photos, you can use their site to hunt down exactly what you’re looking for.

6. Death to the Stock Photo

Premium access is well worth the money for all the amazing, high quality, unique and very un-stock-like photos you’ll get, but the free option is great too. Sign up and you’ll get a selection in your inbox every week.


7. Pexels

Just like a paid site, only it's all free. The browse by category and search functions let you work much faster too.

8. Startup Stock Photos

Startup Stock Photos has a very business-ey, tech vibe. If you need beautiful photos of computers, phones and office environments, then this is the place for you.

9. Barn Images

Brilliant cityscapes and landscapes abound - and you can even sign up to have them delivered to your inbox once a week.

There you have it: a boatload of brilliant stock photos, free of charge. Even if money is tight, there’s there’s no excuse for sub-par images anymore. Of course, someone has to go out there with a camera and take these, so we very much encourage you to donate to the artists where possible.
